For those of you who have been following my blog for a while, you probably know that I have a preference for classical grain film. My favourite and most used emulsions – Kentmere 400 / RPX 400, HP5+, Tri-X, they all are high speed classical grain films and this preference is unlikely to change. However, I’m still on the lookout for an emulsion that keeps the size of classical grain ISO 400 film even when pushed. My first attempt was made with T-Max 400 and the grain structure was just great pushed to 1600, but the amount of base fog I got in Rodinal (and just about any other developer) was completely unmanageable. I also didn’t like the tonality at all at box-speed. I’m now about to embark on another film test in the same direction, this time with Delta 400. I hope that it is less temperamental to develop so that I might have a good solution for pushing to 1600 and maybe even 3200 without too much of a grain explosion. You see, I don’t mind grain at all, in fact I quite like it, but I don’t like going beyond a certain amount of grain either. Maybe this time I get lucky with my experiments. If not I will probably have to look for a chemical solution to the fog problem – potassium bromide or borax perhaps.

And speaking of fine grain: Today I also got 5 more rolls of ISO 100 film in the mail, in this case RPX 100, and will use them to shoot my Nokton 50mm during the day with wide apertures. But then with the current weather – rain, darkness, gloom and the impending apocalypse – I might have to be a little patient too.
