While I was travelling I only took very few digital pictures, because I had more than enough film to shoot. When I have the choice, I always prefer to shoot film, unless I have to shoot in very difficult conditions where I’d need autofocus and a lot of luck to have 10% of the pictures in focus. Out there I only found myself shooting digital on trains and in train stations, or after it was already too dark to be walking and shooting, all because of the lighting conditions. It would of course be different if I had a film camera with a meter going to ISO 6400.
On my trip I had 3 cameras with me: My beloved Olympus XA, my even more beloved Rolleicord and the E-PL3 with my standard 20mm. I set out with 3 rolls of film, one 120 and two 35mm, all Tri-X. Once there I got another 20 rolls of Rollei RPX 400, 10 in 120, 10 in 35mm, as well as 15 rolls of ridiculously cheap Rossmann 400 film of which I wanted to take 10 back home to experiment with home development. In total I shot 22 rolls of film, 5 colour rolls, and the rest assorted black and white. The ratio of 120 to 35mm was about 1:2 and I tried to shoot one roll of 120 a day, apart from the one time when it was just too heavy to take the Rollei as well.
I have now begun processing the film and will develop all the black and white stuff myself. At about 3 rolls a day it will take me a few days to finish these off and I need the Tri-X to flatten for at least a week before I can show them to you. The Rollei RPX 400 should dry flat though, since all evidence points towards this being Kentmere 400. Yesterday I got my final bit of proof when I managed to tear the film while trying to get the backing paper off – Kentmere has a nightmarishly thin base that also has a tendency to tear in my Zorki. In any case I learned my lesson and used scissors today. I’m also developing this stuff like I would K400, i.e. 70min in Rodinal stand and get precisely the density that the Kentmere would give me. To judge it properly I will have to scan it first though.
