On the day in question I went out with my 50mm lens to shoot people. The results are mediocre at best. Too far away, the composition is not convincing and so on. However, I thought I post some of them anyway, just so that you see what I’ve been working on.

Not sure whether I’ll continue trying to get closer or whether I just stick with my full scenes. The first picture is definitely much stronger than both of these half-baked attempts. I guess I’m too chicken to get really close.
All pictures taken with my Canon EOS 450D and my Canon EF 50mm f/2.0.
Yesterday we were on the way back home from Chemnitz and I was shooting on the run. It’s hard to really know whether there are good results in it before editing them properly. Most pictures seem entirely different in black and white, which is obviously my preferred set-up. Since I shoot in RAW the pictures in my library are in colour before editing. You can already guess as to what it would look like, but sometimes the results really still look very different.
I’ve also been shooting from the hip a lot and that’s still really hit and miss. Often the framing and focus are completely off, but every now and then there is a picture that works. I quite like the perspective and it is quicker than taking the camera to the eye, so I’ll keep working at it.
These days I was concentrating on my photography a lot, but now I’m going to start with my drawing exercises again. I’m not sure how much time I will have for shooting then, but as long as I’m going out of the house it should be just as much as now. Maybe I will spend a little less time on editing then, but I’m not quite sure about that yet. I first have to see how much time the rest really takes up.
wow, if you’ve shot these portraits with a 35mm lens (even taking the crop factor into account) i think you must have been already quite close (at least far out ouf my comfort zone at least ;)) or was it the 50mm? the text is a bit ambiguous in this regard.

Haha, you’re right, I changed it now: It was the 50mm on the crop, so around 80 full frame. For the 50mm it’s still too far away I think. 35mm would be way out of my comfort zone as well!
Turns out I use my 35mm so often that I already write this bit automatically! Thanks for pointing out my mistake 🙂
I like very much the third picture: the expression on the face is strong, and the pole behind the shoulders divides the frame in two part, one of witch is almost square like if taken with a Rolleiflex…and the other part, narrow, vertical, out of focus is complementary (personally I would crop it a little between the N and D, but that is just my taste.

You’re definitely braver than I could be with this street photography especially since you prefer the less crowded areas in which you’re probably more likely to be noticed. I’m more shy and not sure I could do it…also some of the expressions do look rather annoyed…would hate to get in an argument with someone. Would definitely keep the boredom at a low level….
