On some days I can really understand why Vivian Maier never showed her work to anyone. Although I generally get very good feedback from my blog and know that a lot of people like it, I also had some negative things crop up lately. Too many negative things, actually. Twice this year I even considered deleting the blog altogether, that’s how annoying things can get! But then, I also know that on the whole this is positive for me. It helps me focus, makes me work harder to show you something and I do get a lot of nice comments from you guys. I just wish that I didn’t have to deal with negative stuff every single week as well! Seriously, one week without the negative stuff would do wonders for me right about now, especially since my health has been so annoying lately that I just don’t have the energy to cope with idiotic things on top of everything else.

I guess on days like this I just have to remember what I wrote about Lee Miller, chin up and dodge the bullets that fly towards me, metaphorically speaking of course. In concrete terms the main effort today was not to lose heart. It was accomplished thanks to a pep-talk by my husband, drinking a cup of fresh mint tea, listening to some tangos and experimenting with a roll of Double-X in Caffenol (which looked quite successful actually).

He had a way with the words … you know, the kind of Russian insults that are so bad that I spare you the details.

  • Take what is useful and leave the rest. Don’t worry about the naysayers; just keep on doing.

  • Dont despair, not everyone is going to like your work, the main thing is that you like what you take and are happy with the results. Anyway what is a good photograph? Some time ago I found this tongue in cheek appraisal of some of the most iconic photographs ever and it brought it home to me that one mans masterpeice is anothers piece of rubbish

I am struggling to see how the picture of the toy trike is considered iconic I think the links author is spot on with his appraisal of that one,

My favorite of your latest Lilly is the street cleaner and those things going on around him, Other good ones in there too. The two children running is nice I like the way the XA adds a fluidity and atmosphere to certain shots I have noticed it in some of your other XA work……..All good for me.
