hell is suburbia © Lilly Schwartz 2012
I think by now you might have noticed that I really dislike suburbia. It’s boring photographic no man’s land, it’s loud because of the lawnmowers, the annoying neighbours and all those people hanging out in their neatly trimmed gardens. I prefer wild gardens with higher grass and weeds to the neatly trimmed, perfectly decorated gardens any day. It’s a matter of taste I guess, but I just can’t see the point in cutting grass so short that it’s spiky when you walk on it barefoot!
The picture shows the front garden of the house where my dad lives. It’s not his garden, but the garden of the landlord. The sheep are really a perfect depiction of suburban tastes.
Amen to your headline, Lilly. Great shot though.
Thanks 🙂 And glad you agree!
The positive side is that even in such a place you manage to make great photos! It’s a good eye training!

Thanks Robert! Yes, one always has to see also the positive side of things. Still I rather have surroundings that are interesting to photograph.
The old phrase by someone; “then just take pictures of the ugly stuff.” Don’t loose heart. Wipe the tears. Here all roads have ditches since we get snow and they plow all the snow into those ditches. In the summer weeds grow and if it really rains, the weeds and wild flowers grow higher than a person on the roadway much less if you were to stand in the ditch. Lately we get rain everyday and night. Try to find a plastic flamingo or one of those glass lawn balls. In the small city here there is one wooden Indian left by a tobacco shop. Can you believe it? A Native Indigenous wooden “Indian.” So, plastic sheep. In one village here they do plastic cows and let artists paint them. My mind is wandering too much.
Interesting! In an allotment in Berlin I saw a frog that made sounds when you walked past. Terrible! I actually like sheep, but I would *never* put such figures in my garden, it’s creepy! Same goes for garden gnomes and the likes. One of the neighbours there also has wild boar made from stone on his lawn. I mean … WHY?! The wooden Indian in front of the tobacco shop sounds like a similar thing actually. I guess I just don’t like the aesthetics of neatly trimmed gardens and the people who usually have them around here. Too conservative and German for my liking.
lol Yea, agreed…the sheep make the scene!
Haha, not much else in there, true 😉 Such a boring garden!
This is nice thread. There’s a song called Don’t Mow Your Lawn; sort of a retro funkadelic thing by the Alligatory band. This may be editorial photography on this one. Kinda funny in a way. I like it. Let’s see more of the uglies & the burbs, yeah, yeah. 🙂
Luckily I don’t normally spend time in the burbs. I also know people who hate cities and find that I take pictures in the uglies anyway 😉
Hahaha… I was just going to say I think you are starting to like suburbia, Ms. S…
😉
