day 116: pretty much all of Hamburg

This is pretty much all of Hamburg I have seen over the weekend. Sure, I walked around the residential area where our flat was for a bit, but we skipped all of the tourist attractions since Ezequiel has something weird going on with his foot at the moment. It hurts for no apparent reason, so he can’t walk very far. Therefore we ended up just sitting in a coffee place at the station in the 1 1/2 hrs we had before our train left. Hamburg and Berlin are closer together than I always thought, but maybe that’s not very surprising since geography was probably the only subject in school I might have failed if I hadn’t been able to get out of it. When it comes to countries I’m not so bad, but my perception of where rivers and cities are located in the world is probably a bit warped. However, that’s not really bad, since I’m not much of a tourist anyway. If I go somewhere I feel more like trying out the way people live there rather than seeing all the shiny places, museums and statues a place has to offer. Such places just seem less real for me.

  • I really like this photo in B&W. Even though it is of the modern era it has a vintage look to it. Well done!!! We hate the tourist places too and always try to do as the locals do.

    • Thanks David 🙂 Great that these days I seem to be achieving the look I’m going for in my pictures! Tourist stuff is totally lame normally …

  • Really like this one…from this view..kinda looks like toy trains.

    • Thanks Jason, I wasn’t really that much going for the toy look – you can enhance that effect with some tilt shift processing, but I think it can’t be avoided when you take pictures of trains from above 🙂

  • I like the darkness in this image.

    • Thanks Aaron! Yeah, this station is really rather gloomy and it was a particularly grey day too. I personally think stations just have to look like this 🙂

  • Ahhh Germany ! I will spend few days in Düsseldorf and Freiburg soon !!
Maybe I should also try to take pictures in the train stations !!
    I really like yours !!

    • Thanks Mathias! I used to live in Düsseldorf and really like the place. I only visited Freiburg once, but it seems like a nice place too. It’s full of students. The Düsseldorf train station is nothing special and the Freiburg one I can’t remember. There are some memorable ones in Berlin and a nice one in Leipzig, but that’s probably too far East for you.

  • Nice black and white shot. 🙂

  • This is wonderful, Ms. S…
I think trains are just inherently interesting, and I love the atmosphere you’ve captured here… I think the high contrast works so well… definitely one of my favorites!

    • Thanks spilledinkguy! When I was looking down at the station I knew that I had my picture of the day. It has a great gloomy atmosphere that one. I really like old train stations. Mostly because I used to want to get away from my hometown and trains were the only way to leave 😉

  • I’ve been to Berlin twice … but I flew there and did not visit the train station 🙁
Maybe one day I’ll go visit East Germany !
Unfortunately, Freiburg’s train station is far from being nice …
I guess, I’ll have to take picture at the “Weihnachtsmarkt” instead 🙂
    I really like Freiburg’s one … and the Glühwein !! 🙂
I love Freiburg in general … I spent 3 years there and I really enjoy my time … I still have friends, this is why I go to Freiburg next weekend after going to Düsseldorf for my job.
