day 31: make it so

Yesterday I went to a Star Trek convention for the second time in my life. It was a FedCon Special, namely the Captain’s Table in Düsseldorf. Patrick Stewart, i.e. Jean-Luc Picard, Captain of the Enterprise, Avery Brooks, i.e. Commander of the space station Deep Space Nine, and Kate Mulgrew, i.e. Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Voyager, were there and I saw them all in the panels. Garrett Wang, i.e. the never promoted Ensign Harry Kim, was also there announcing the guests and in his usual chipper self he was very good entertainment.

I have to admit that I have seen all episodes of all Star Trek series at least twice and I also have seen the films several times. I’m not the typical geeky fan with Vulcan ears or a Star Trek uniform, but I have always enjoyed Star Trek and I’m generally a fan of Science Fiction. I also enjoyed the remake of Battle Star Galactica and Firefly very much, so I’d say I know a lot about Science Fiction, at least when it comes to TV series.

Additionally to expecting lots of fun during the convention I also hoped to give my new telephoto lens a spin with some more difficult lighting conditions and some very expressive people to photograph. I shot about 500 pictures, so 5 times my usual daily number of shots and I got some great pictures. It was a really difficult choice this time, because I had great shots of all four actors and I was even considering posting more than one picture. In the end I decided to stick to my original plan though and chose this picture of Patrick Stewart which vaguely resembles his typical “make it so” pose from the series. His panel was very enjoyable and he talked about a few things I already suspected, but didn’t know for sure: For example he said that he has the bad habit of buying too many books. Well, I love men who love books, so I was just smiling to myself when he said that.

This post would get way too long if I would want to go into more detail about the convention, so let’s just say that I’m a geek and that I had a very good time at the Captain’s Table!

  • Oh, now that’s just too cool!
    What an ‘engaging’ portrait!
    🙂

  • How fun! I don’t read much sci-fi, but I love the movies and tv programs.

    • I love the tv programs, the movies and I’ve read a lot of science fiction too. I just always enjoyed it 🙂

  • Love TNG! Picard is my favorite captain of all time, and “Q” my favorite villain. What a fun experience!

    • TNG is my favourite Star Trek series and Sir Patrick is just a really good actor! Maybe Picard is such a likable character, because Patrick Stewart has added a lot of his own character to it. One can question whether this is good style for an actor, but since the man is just so interesting it really added a lot for the series!

  • You lucky person being that close to John Luke Picard!
