I’m not very good with travelling to be honest, especially with flying. I hate the queues, the waiting, the security checks, the blatantly obvious attempt at selling you overpriced crap that you don’t need. And I dislike that most airports just look so similar, especially in England. Yesterday however, when I was flying from Gatwick to Düsseldorf I had one of the purely delightful moments of flying, namely when you look out of the airplane window and your jaw just drops in awe. I just had to take a picture of this sunset over the clouds!
I generally had a nice last day in Brighton. I bought some juggling balls and my friend Miro with whom I was staying in Brighton gave me a first lesson in juggling on the beach. I’m still far from anything that looks like juggling at all, but it was a lot of fun! And after all now I have lots of time to improve my skills since I have finished university. I generally feel like doing all the things that I wanted to do “someday when I have time” and I can instantly think of 5 things that fall into this category. And now I have the perfect opportunity to do these things!
You can imagine that this freedom is generally giving me a very good feeling. It also falls together with some nice things that happen around me. For example, tomorrow – and hereby I admit that I’m a real geek – I will go to a Star Trek convention! The last time I went to one was before I started to study. I’m sure it will be a fantastic opportunity to try out my new 55-250mm lens I just bought. And as soon as I arrive back in Berlin on Thursday there will be a concert of the Einstürzenden Neubauten, one of my favourite bands which I’ve been dying to see in concert for years now. Somehow they were always sold out or playing too far away or something else got in the way. A perfect start for my holiday indeed!

What’s missing for the airline brochure would be a beauty-shot of the airplane photoshopped into it! In any case, I really like the picture too and I was just waiting for the plane to turn in time, because the sunset was on the other side of the plane most of the time! The convention picture is coming up today 🙂
There is something extra special in the way it is slightly off kilter.
Yeah, I agree. Partly this is because I didn’t want the wing on the picture, but it is also because the plane was circling over the city before going down at that point!

Thanks a lot 🙂 I’m also hoping for a nice holiday now that everything is finished. The view from the plane really made up for the annoying rest of taking planes to get to places. The security measures are just getting more and more ridiculous, especially in England …

Well, I’ve been flying a lot the last few years and the whole of last year I didn’t even see one sunset, so indeed, rarely observed. I saw a sunrise two or three years ago on a 5.30 flight which would have even made a more amazing shot than this one, but I didn’t have a camera on me back then.
Yeah I can totally understand the feeling of not having a camera at the right time. But still, this shot is amazing. 🙂
Thanks again 🙂 I often have moments where I don’t have the camera on me, but I try to restrict myself to 100 pictures a day anyway apart from special occasions. However, I also think that taking pictures sometimes lets you miss the moment itself …

Great luck at getting this shot. I hate flying and find that if I take pics it takes my mind off of it for awhile.
Definitely a rare sight, so I was indeed lucky. I also hate flying a lot. I also used to be quite afraid of it, but these days it has changed a bit. Still, I hate it passionately and I fly way too often for how much I hate it!
Great image, flying above the cloud deck is a treat, glad you got to capture the moment.
