After thinking about the dark days and nights this time of year I have realised something rather obvious: My Canon EF-S 55-250mm telephoto lens has with f4.0 a wider aperture at 55mm than my EF-S 18-55mm lens. The latter has f5.6. This means that this lens is useful after all even when it’s dark, at least if I don’t zoom. I can take pictures from further away which makes it feel less like I’m in someone’s face when I’m taking pictures on the street. Granted, it’s not too great: The pictures need quite some sharpening, but that’s not much of a problem. And it also convinces me that the f1.4 50mm lens will indeed be useful even with the crop of my camera.

Well, enough with the technical talk. I was out to go to the supermarket the other day and managed to take a picture of this little scene. This guy seemed to be getting more and more annoyed that he had to wait for the children. I think he told them to hurry up, although I can’t be sure since they weren’t speaking any language I understood.

In comparison to summer there are less people on the street at this time of night, because it’s getting just a bit too cold. Instead the youths are sitting in the fast food joints, looking outside into the night, eating, laughing. Some of them look bored, well, just as bored as they look in summer when they have nothing to do. I know it doesn’t make much of a difference to them whether they hang around in the shops or outside, but I’d be glad if it was a bit warmer now. My fingers are getting cold while shooting outside.
