sneaky

Yesterday the impossible happened: My Rodinal apparently experienced sudden death and took one of my rolls with it. I would have been annoyed under normal circumstances already, but in this case it was even more of a blow. I actually went out into the rain to shoot that roll! At least it wasn’t that important and I only had one roll in the tank, but it still makes me grind my teeth. It was supposed to be an experiment and a bit of practice with my new lens: Pan F+ 50 street shots on a gloomy day shot at f/1.1. I repeated the experiment today, but I definitely didn’t get as interesting shots as I lost yesterday. And since I now have to wait for a new bottle of Rodinal I’ll have to use HC-110 for the Pan F+ 50, which seems to be a tricky combination. HC-110 will become my main developer for a while though in general. I used mainly Caffenol-CL stand last year, but these days I like to just stick a 5 roll tank into the CPE-2 and be done after 5-10min development time instead of 1h. Apart from the quick turn around time, using the Jobo has also managed to rid me of certain problems with unevenness that stand-development seems to produce with some films. Although HC-110 might not be the very best developer for the Jobo (that would be Xtol according to popular opinion), it works much better than Caffenol-CH which produces less than stellar shadow detail. I doubt that I’ll keep going with the HC-110 until the bottle is empty – 1L of HC-110 is enough for roughly 260 rolls of film in the Jobo – but I’ll definitely give it a good chance to convince me of its virtues before I try something else instead.
