hands up

The last two weeks I’ve been taking it relatively easy. Although I’ve spent quite a bit of my time studying Russian, I made sure I had tons of time to relax to watch series and read. I needed a break after a lot of work at the beginning of the month. As for my Russian studies: Although I’ve already begun to decipher a book in Russian now, these days I’m mostly reading and watching things in Spanish. As long as my Russian vocabulary is still small and my knowledge of the grammar incomplete, it’s still very hard work to follow along in Russian. I hope that by this time next year I will be watching things with ease in Russian though. In fact, when watching movies I already understand a lot more than at the beginning when I could only recognise a few words here and there. After a month of studying Russian I also know how to say a number of things, but I’m not yet able to have a real conversation. I can introduce myself, count to 10 and answer a few basic questions about myself, but in a real conversation I would inevitable run into a problem after about 20sec that no amount of hand-waving could solve. So far apart from the alphabet I only know about 500 words, two of the verb tenses and 4 of the 6 cases. With such large gaps in my knowledge, there are therefore still quite a number of things that I could only express in Tarzan speak and I’m definitely no fan of that. However, I hope that by the end of the year I can have simple conversations. Right now I’m also basically fighting against my memory because it doesn’t really want to retain all these strange words and spellings. I think I’m getting somewhere though and all these things are already a lot easier to remember than a month ago!
