I had a great time at the exhibition opening last night and was really quite pleased how the room looked when it was finished. And very appropriately the band that was playing was actually a tango duo! If you’re interested in seeing the exhibition then you still have the opportunity this coming week, every day from 3pm to 6pm (Rösslstube, Friedrichstraße 37, Dresden) and on the 13th of June there will be a finissage with a literature reading.
Of course I also took some pictures last night, but it will be a few days until I can develop and scan the rolls. This is of course the disadvantage when travelling with film only, but so far I haven’t regretted my choice to go completely analog this year. My Zeiss lens is absolutely wonderful, the Leica is a joy to shoot and I’m generally pleased with the results I’m getting. I’m still tweaking my process a little and experimenting to perfect my development, but I’m getting closer and closer to the results I want to achieve, even in colour.
If you’ve been following my work then you probably know that colour just didn’t used to happen for me until October last year when I saw a Joel Meyerowitz retrospective in Düsseldorf. Contrary to what you might think it wasn’t his colour street work that blew me away. It was the Cape Light series with these massive large format prints. When I turned to colour a few days later, I wasn’t planning to shoot any colour street at all, but I was rather looking to incorporate colour into other projects. However, the problem is that I don’t “see” colour. I’m not colour blind, if that’s what you’re thinking, it’s just that colour doesn’t have any meaning in my visual world. And this is why I pushed myself to shoot only colour in Argentina, even if that meant that I had to shoot street in colour as well. Although I enjoy the atmosphere of the rolls I’ve developed so far, I know that colour doesn’t really suit my style of shooting that much. Some of the shots might even end up in black and white when I’m finished with them. However, it’s good to push myself a little and leave my comfort zone every now and then.
