Half the fun of film photography for me is a healthy amount of experimentation. Yesterday I was bulk loading my first roll of film from a 100ft roll of XP2 and now I’m eager to go shoot that stuff. It was my first time bulk loading so I hope I did it right! The XP2 came to me thanks to one of my experiments as well: I developed some of this stuff in Rodinal and the results were so lovely that I just bought a whole 100ft roll after that.

Instead of going out today to shoot that XP2 I decided to experiment a little more though and tried to semi-stand develop some Tri-X in Caffenol-CL for 30min with 3 inversions at 1, 5 and 15 minutes after the initial 30 sec agitation. Well, the negatives came out fine, but when I pulled the roll out of the tank I found that the roll had way more base-fog than I expected. I stupidly forgot to add the potassium bromide that is supposed to cut through that fog. Oops! I wanted to try that anyway at some point just to see what happens, but I didn’t exactly plan to try two experiments at once!

All pictures taken with: Olympus XA, F.Zuiko 35mm f/2.8.

The thing the kid is playing with is a disposable glove. I play with them all the time too when developing film.
