hold on

After a deadline yesterday I’m now embracing a new found freedom that allows me to work more according to my own priorities rather than towards the usual necessities of the academic process. I’ve therefore used the day to continue studying Russian and I’m making good progress now. Does Russian seem random to you? Well, it is actually not, since my parents spoke Russian with us the first few years of our lives. It turns out that I do remember some of it and instead of spending a lot of time getting verb conjugations wrong while trying to memorise the pattern, I got them right pretty much immediately after a quick refresher. I do remember quite well how I struggled with the conjugations in Italian and Spanish and what I experienced with the conjugations of Russian today was nothing like it! It was actually a little weird! I doubt that more complex structures will come to me so easily, but it’s good to know that I might be able to at least pick up some things more quickly. I definitely have to build up my vocabulary from scratch, but maybe some of the structures won’t be too terrible. Considering the gazillion cases, tenses and exceptions of Russian, even one thing less to learn is rather a relief I think.

Originally I had planned to only start learning Russian next year, because I’ll need it the year after, but I’ve come to realise that doing it now rather than later will give it more time to grow automatically before I actually need it. As soon as I can understand enough to watch series or movies I can learn without effort while relaxing and this is the level I want to reach for now.

In Argentina there are trees that are actually bushes, an ocean that is actually a river and a bookshop that is actually a theatre.
